Founded in Manchester in 2020 Mill Media have journalists operating in six cities, producing long reads and investigations that set the agenda.

Mill Media is transitioning from Substack to Ghost. Velocity Flow provided theme customization and launch support for The Glasgow Bell on Ghost.

Rapid growth

The Glasgow Bell has close to 5,000 subscribers after less than two months, and almost 250 paying members within a week of launching paid subscriptions.

Staff

The Bell is staffed by two full-time employees: former Novara Media contributing editor Moya Lothian-McLean and former freelance Robbie Armstrong. More on the launch from Press Gazette

Lothian-McLean said The Bell wants “to tell the story of everyday people in Glasgow and reflect back at them a city that they recognise but might not see always portrayed in the media that they consume”.

The launch

The launch was a massive success with 2.000+ signups during the first two weeks.

Effortless sharing of articles

To support growth the WebShare API was implemented on the site. This enables sharing to apps on mobile devices, and by e-mail and to web clients on desktop.

The appeal of long-form stories

This curated selection from The Bell's sister publications demonstrates the power and appeal of well-crafted long-form stories:
